Description
Breed History
This breed is truly what can be deemed an uber chicken because of its features and benefits ranging from true autosexing at hatch, fast growth, early laying (for a large breed), good number of eggs each week, very friendly, beautiful in appearance, and a delicious and tender bird for the table ready to process between 12 and 14 weeks. You will not find these at a hatchery. This breed is magnificent in every way and is a pure joy to have on our farm as we are sure they will be on yours. The Silvers are cousins to the Crele which was created by a renowned poultry man named Gerd Roth in the 1970s in Germany. The Crele is quite popular and has the appearance of multi-color speckled type feathering. They are a wonderful breed; however, this silver version has been bred for faster point-of-lay and larger frame. They produce approximately two hundred large to extra-large medium brown and speckled eggs per year and typically begin laying at 5.5 months compared to their Crele cousins which are between seven to nine months. The roosters outweigh their cousin by approximately 1.5 lbs.
Appearance and Behavior
As day-old chicks the males are easily distinguishable from the females by the pale silver feather patterning, and as adults the males are predominantly silver and white with black featuring in their hackle and tail feathers, while the females have a color pattern inverted, meaning they are predominantly silver/brown with white featuring in their hackle and chest and mottled down their backs. This incredible breed love foraging and will happily spend most of their day out and about. The roosters are good protectors of the hens and normally not aggressive to people, in fact our roosters are gentle giants. This breed is good at staying mostly together while out foraging.
Typical weight at maturity
Roosters 12+ lbs
Hens 7 to 8 lbs
Notes
This unique autosexing breed was developed in Canada, and the hens lay large to extra-large medium brown eggs. The roosters grow very large making this a perfect dual-purpose breed. Nickelbeak Hollow secured breeding stock from the originators of the Silver Bielefelder in the USA which secured and maintain their original genetic stock from the Canadian developers.
Origin: Canada
Type: Standard large fowl
