Breed History
This breed is a true Lavender (self-blue) Ameraucana.
The important thing to know is that this breed is not an Americana which is really an Easter Egger. These are truly rare purebred chickens from show quality birds! Nickelbeak Hollow secured breeding stock from the best Lavender Ameraucana show quality stock in the country.
The Ameraucana chicken breed is one of the most popular chickens in the world. They lay stunningly beautiful bright blue eggs and have a sweet and congenial temperament. One of the great things about this chicken breed is that they have pea combs which makes them ideal for cold climates because they are less susceptible to frostbite. They love to free range and do well in a decent sized confined area. Their super cute, tufted earmuffs give them a gorgeous frame to their face along with their bearded neck.
Lavender Ameraucanas are one of the newest and hardest lavender chickens to find which guarantee great quality. Our Lavender Ameraucana chickens were selectively chosen particularly for the hens with the most beautful soft lavender colors and the roosters with no yellowing in their back and neck. Yellowing in the male lavender chickens is common but our males have none at all and are pure lavender color head to tail. Though our adult stock are the offspring from show quality stock we cannot guarantee the chicks you receive will turn out to be show quality.
Though not “yet” an accepted color variety by the APA, they are one of the most popular and sought after varieties. The Ameraucana chicken was created in America in the 1970’s and the breed was accepted by the APA as a standard breed in 1984. The accepted color varieties by the APA are Black, Blue, Blue Wheaten, Brown Red, Buff, Silver, Wheaten and White. The APA will hopefully be accepting this lavender breed very soon.
These hard-to-find Lavender Ameraucana chickens are genuine purebreds and come from true show quality genetics. Truly one of the most stunning breeds of lavender chickens you’ll ever see in your yard. Order your adorable Lavender Ameraucana baby chicks today!
Appearance and Behavior
As day-old chicks the males and females are very much alike. As they develop it becomes obvious which are males through the early development of their “corn cob” type comb (three rows), thicker and longer legs, and overall size in comparison to the females. As adults the males have significantly longer legs than the females and develop an amazing display of saddle and tail feathers. Both the adult male and female remain lavender in color for the entirety of their lives. The females develop into extremely pretty hens with a very friendly demeanor.
This wonderful breed is excellent at foraging and will happily spend most of their day scratching around for bugs and worms and exploring their surrounds. The roosters are good protectors of the hens and normally not aggressive to people. This breed tends to stay together while out foraging.
Typical weight at maturity:
Roosters 6 to 7.5 lbs
Hens 5 to 6 lbs
The hens are not likely to get broody.
