Description

History:

  • The Tappit Shetland Hen is a rare breed originating from the Shetland Isles, with its existence largely owed to the Isbisters of Trondra, who saved the breed single-handedly.
  • The breed has been preserved and looked after since the 1970s on the island of Trondra.

Origins:

  • The Tappit Shetland Hen has origins tracing back to South America and arrived on the Shetland Isles via Spain approximately 430 years ago. There is a possibility that they were brought to the islands by a Spanish galleon.
  • Surviving hens were originally from Foula, a remote western isle, and the Isbisters purchased this surviving flock to initiate the breeding program.

Characteristics:

  • Descended from South American hens akin to the Araucana Hen from Chile.
  • Relatively heavy with a characteristic tuft of feathers on the head, known as “Tapp” in Shetland (tufted in Scots).
  • Blue-green egg coloring influenced by Spanish genetics.
  • Influences from the Original Shetland Hen already present on the islands for centuries.
  • Comes in a variety of colors.

Population and Preservation:

  • The breed’s population is now limited, with approximately three dozen purebred Tappit Shetland Hens left on the isle.
  • The Isbisters’ efforts are crucial in preserving the breed, emphasizing the importance of maintaining biodiversity in poultry.
